Ways to protect your garden during winter

Not only that you need to protect the garden, but also, find ways to improve your backyard and to make it even more beautiful than it is now. Winter weather is unpredictable, especially if you live in the northern part of the USA. But, you should not relax even if you live in Southern states. Watering plants during winter? Yes, because evergreen trees and shrubs lose a great amount of water during cold and weather and you need to provide irrigation (unless rainfall is sufficient). Also, soil moisture will protect dormant and evergreen plants. Water all plantings at least 24h before hard-freezing weather.

Protecting trees

If you have sensitive trees in your garden, it requires special protection during the winter months. Those trees are having thin or smooth bark, so you can use commercial protective material to prevent winter sunscald. Also, newly planted trees should be protected and some trees require staking.

Protect water features

Water features can decorate your garden, but they also need protection during the winter months. Never allow the pump to freeze, so remove the pump and store it in the garage or basement over winter. Ceramic water features can crack with freezing temperatures, that is why you need to store them too indoors.

Container plants

One of the ways to protect your garden during winter is to put plants indoors, in a sheltered location. Of course, only store plants that are sensitive to winter. After the winter months are finished, put them outside again.
